Here are our top tips about vaccinating your rabbits;

Two vaccinations a year

To protect your rabbits against Myxomatosis, RVHD1 and RVHD2 they will need 2 vaccinations per year, given at least 2 weeks apart.

Myxomatosis

Myxomatosis is a severe viral infection that is spread by fleas, mites and mosquitoes. Both outdoor and indoor / house rabbits can become infected. It is invariably fatal in unvaccinated rabbits; while vaccinated rabbits have occasionally contracted myxomatosis, in these cases the disease is much milder and they usually survive.

Viral haemorrhagic disease (Types 1 and 2)

RHD1 is a virus that is highly infectious and causes massive internal bleeding, leading to sudden death within 1 – 2 days.

RHD2 is a newer variant of RHD that has emerged in the past few years and is often but not always fatal.  Both strains are well established in the wild rabbit population in the UK.

Both viruses are transmitted through food, clothing or footwear contaminated with infected wild rabbit droppings. They can also be transmitted by birds and insects or even on the wind. These highly resistant viruses can survive in the environment for many months. Both outdoor and indoor / house rabbits can become infected.

Vaccinations

Rabbits can be vaccinated from 5 weeks of age, with a 2-week gap between the two vaccinations. They should receive annual boosters. Vaccination provides good and safe immunity against these fatal diseases.
