Dental care for the pets of Kent

Dental disease is one of the conditions we treat most regularly, and most pets will suffer from dental problems at some point in their lives.

While owners can help to control this by feeding their pets healthy diets, cutting down on treats and cleaning teeth where possible, it is also important that your pet is regularly checked by one of our team. This will help to highlight any issues early, making treatment easier and more effective, whilst hopefully avoiding serious, long-term health concerns.

How do we know if there is a problem with your pets?

Unfortunately, most animals hide pain extremely well – an evolutionary trait to avoid them from seeming weak in the wild.

This can make it difficult for us to diagnose when something is going wrong in their mouths.

Symptoms of poor oral health in our pets can include:

  • green check
    Persistent bad breath
  • green check
    Sensitivity around the mouth
  • green check
    Loss of appetite
  • green check
    Difficulty eating and chewing food
  • green check
    Pawing at mouth
  • green check
    Loose or missing teeth
  • green check
    Bleeding, inflamed or receding gums
  • green check
Tartar or discolouring of the teeth

What dental treatments can we provide your pets?

We offer a range of dental services to the cats, dogs and small animals of Kent.

Our emphasis is on preventative dental care, so we offer advice on diets that promote good oral hygiene and dental care, with the focus on trying to limit further dental treatments.

If we feel it is best for your pet we may ask you to attend one of our Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Maidstone branches for a scale, polish or extractions.

We have a digital radiography machines, specifically for taking dental x-rays of your pet. This enables us to offer a superior service by assessing diseased or damaged teeth below the gum line, as well as any further damage to the jaw bone, roots or soft tissues.

All of our pet dental care prices are fixed, including great aftercare, to ensure that your pet recovers swiftly and stays as healthy as possible afterwards.

How can you help at home?

Different species have different needs when it comes to dental care.

For example, rabbits have teeth that constantly grow, and it is crucial that their diet enables them to wear their teeth down. If this is not ensured, it can lead to serious health problems, and can, in extreme cases, be fatal.

You should speak to your veterinary team to get specific advice for your pet. But generally, feeding your pet a sensible, healthy diet will go a long way towards keeping their teeth and gums in good condition.

Dogs and cats benefit from having their teeth brushed – although always with specially designed, species-specific toothpaste and toothbrushes. Our nurses are happy to help to get you started and to show you how best to go about it.
