Diagnostic imaging

State-of-the-art diagnostic equipment at Pennard Vets

We have a range of modern diagnostic equipment across our practices to help our vets to reach a speedy and accurate diagnosis. This allows us to proceed as swiftly as possible to treatment, giving your pet the best possible outcome.

Our team contains vets and nurses who have post-graduate qualifications and lots of experience of using diagnostic imaging equipment, meaning that your pet is always in the very best hands.

Radiography

Radiography is the process of using x-rays to produce images of the inside of the body.

We mainly use x-rays in the diagnosis of issues with teeth, bones and joints. X-rays are an extremely useful tool and can be used for a range of reasons, such as to assess if your pet has swallowed something they shouldn’t, to assess the health of their lungs and to diagnose issues with their gastro-intestinal tract.

Most pets will require sedation or anaesthesia during the x-ray process as it is otherwise difficult to keep them still long enough for us to produce an accurate image.

X-rays are perfectly safe in the small doses it takes to diagnose issues with individual pets, but our vets and nurses will wear protection due to them being repeatedly exposed to the radiation.

We use digital radiography, which is much faster than conventional radiography, which involves the development of film to produce an image. This means that we can provide better quality images much quicker than before, limiting the amount of time your pet has to be under anaesthetic.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound involves sound waves being pulsed into the body, with an image being formed as they travel at different speeds through different body tissue.

Unlike x-rays, ultrasound produces a dynamic image that moves in real time, making it useful for monitoring things such as blood flow through organs.
