How we can help to you to support diabetic pets

Similar to humans, pets can suffer from diabetes, leading to many of the same symptoms and side-effects, and with similar treatment options.

Pets with diabetes may not be able to produce enough insulin for their body’s needs, or they may be unable to process the insulin they create effectively. Insulin is produced by the pancreas, and allows glucose in the blood to enter cells.

Symptoms of diabetes in pets can include:

  • green check
    Weight loss
  • green check
Change to appetite, either increased or decreased
  • green check
    Excessive thirst and urination
  • green check
Smelly breath, often described as chemical
Some of the symptoms of diabetes can be similar to other age-related conditions, which is one reason why we pay particular attention to our senior patients.
How we can treat pets with diabetes

If your vet diagnoses your pet with diabetes, they may prescribe insulin injections as a treatment.

If this happens, your vet will give you all of the information that you need to safely monitor your pet’s insulin levels, and our nurses are always here to help if you need assistance administering insulin injections.

Once your pet’s diabetes is under control, it is important to monitor their blood sugar levels and to maintain a healthy diet, in order to stay on top of the condition.

Again, your vet will talk you through what you need to do and will work with you to create the ideal diet, based on the nature of their diabetes diagnosis, as well as their species, age and weight.

What we’re talking about

Keep your pet healthy with plenty of exercise!

It’s an unfortunate fact that diabetes often occurs due to pets being overweight.

Our vets and nurses are happy to help you with dietary advice if you are unsure how much food you should be giving your pet, and which foods to avoid.

As well as this it is crucial that your pet gets enough exercise.

That means daily walks for dogs wherever possible, and cats should be encouraged to exercise daily as well – no matter how difficult it may seem to coerce a cat to do anything!
